Chapter Nine

We scrambled up from the desk chair as the vampire watched us. A chill splashed my spine, cold dread leaking into my body and making my mind numb. This was my nightmare. Him in the night, coming for me. I began to shake and a lump grew in my throat so vividly physical that I started to gag. He watched us cooly, without a semblance of familiarity. His eyes dragged over Tate then moved on to me. His smile dropped and his eyes narrowed.

“Bo Bachman?” He asked with a tilt of his head. Through the haze of fear, I noticed his overwhelming sexual appeal was gone. Stripped away for whatever reason. Whether because I was a vampire myself, or because I knew the truth about him. It didn’t matter. I was just happy that I could look on his face and see the monster he was now. Which did not mean he was ugly in the least, but there was no preternatural and unexplainable draw.

I opened my mouth to talk and nothing came out. It was always so important to be quiet at night. He’d promised he’d kill me if I was loud. A threat and a promise he repeated frequently with his teeth at my throat.

“How has this happened?” He asked himself in curiosity, slinking into the room with steps too smooth to be human. His chest didn’t heave with breath either, I realized. His daily act of humanity had fallen away. My shaking intensified until I felt like one of those damn shaking leaves in the wind and rain. I gnashed my teeth together and tried to will myself still. When I did, blankness started to leak into my mind, drawing me farther and farther away from the moment, dissociating until there were no feelings. I know it meant I was probably fucked up but it also helped right this moment.

“I’d like to know that too,” I finally said, my voice smooth and even. I moved farther in front of Tate, not wanting doctor Wolfe to grow interested in him too much. Wolfe pulled a hand from his crossed arms and tucked an errant blonde hair behind his ear. He was still wearing his wavy, golden locks back in a tight bun. His golden eyes seemed to glow in the moonlight streaming from his open window. He scraped his elongated canines over his bottom lip as he thought.

“I have heard of this. How interesting,” he said looking me over top to bottom again. “Yet also, unfortunate.” He added, sliding into the room further. My body seemed to throb but all I felt was more cool detachment, my emotions and thoughts shutting down to keep the fear and panic away. His presence descended on me, his signature scent of cloves and leather subtle yet overwhelming because of the feelings they tried to stir.

I stuttered, my entire body freezing up as he inched closer and closer, his nose inhaling my scent, his eyes cataloging my new body. I couldn’t even really remember Tate was in the room just right behind me.
